Pi Day !

Happy Pi Day !

Today is March 14...or 3.14....otherwise known as Pi day!

Pi, in mathematics, the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. The symbol π was devised by British mathematician William Jones in 1706 to represent the ratio and was later popularized by Swiss mathematician Leonhard Euler. Because pi is irrational (not equal to the ratio of any two whole numbers), its digits do not repeat, and an approximation such as 3.14 or 22/7 is often used for everyday calculations. To 39 decimal places, pi is 3.141592653589793238462643383279502884197.

History of Pi Day? Physicist Larry Shaw started Pi Day in 1988 at San Francisco's Exploratorium to celebrate the famous number and mathematics in general. In 2009, the US House of Representatives passed a resolution to recognize Pi Day. The day aims to raise awareness about the importance of mathematics and its role in shaping our world, as well as to promote the beauty and relevance of mathematics to a wider audience. This year's theme is Mathematics for Everyone. Around the world, more than 1,700 events have been announced to celebrate the beauty and relevance of mathematics to a wider audience

So...we need to have Pi...or PIE.  And our favorite is Apple Pie.

I have made apple pie often, and usually without the top crust.  You can find that recipe here -

Fall Apple Pie with Crumb Topping

But for this day, I needed a double crust so we could celebrate the number.

I had a busy day, so I used pre-made pie dough from Aldi.

I rolled out the dough and used a small paring knife to make the pi symbol on the pie crust...

I am not an artist...but I think I did a pretty good job and drawing pie freehand!

I was able to get the crust on the pie without ruining the symbol...and then I tried to put the numbers for pi around the circumference of the pie.

Before baking, I brushed the crust with a little half and half and dusted it with sugar...and used the cut out pi pieces on the top of the crust...

And...even though you cannot see the numbers very well, the pi symbol turned out great!  Now, today, March 14, or 3.14...the only thing left to do is enjoy our PIE !!!

Happy Pi Day to all who celebrate!
