Life Lately

Life Lately....

Hi all - it's been a little while since I posted.  You can see from the photo above it was because we were traveling.  It was a wonderful trip on the Viking Sky Ocean Ship.  We spent two days in Athens before boarding the ship and we so thrilled to get to the Acropolis and see the Parthenon.  Athens was lovely...

Our hotel was near the National Library - so impressive.  Can't get out of librarian mode even when we travel!

Our trip visited Santorini, Corfu, Olympia, Dubrovnik, Zadar, Koper...and ended near Venice.  We took a two day extension in Venice.  Here are some pics of the amazing trip....

The weather was wonderful...except for high winds and rough seas that kept us from getting to Montenegro.  Sorry to miss that port, but that gave us a very relaxing sea day to enjoy the beautiful ship.  We love that way to travel...and Viking Sky is a smaller ship with only 930 passengers.  No casino, not a "party boat", but lots of historical lectures, great tours, lots of places to relax, afternoon tea every day, fabulous food, too.  It is our favorite way to travel.

Here are some photos of the wonderful food...and yes, I had gelato at lunch each day!!!

Our next door neighbors booked the same cruise and we did not know it until a few months before.  It was so much fun to be together on this adventure.  This is in Manfredi's - the Italian restaurant on the ship.

Caprese Salad

Gelato

Lemon Tart

Melon and Prosciutto Salad

Gelato

Veal with warm potato salad

Lemon and almond ravioli...this was amazing.

More gelato....

Baked Brie in a raspberry sauce

BUT....the morning we were to leave Venice my John woke up with a cold.  We were looking forward to getting home as his cold grew worse during the day.  Then our flight home from Heathrow, London was cancelled!  That's the first time that happened to us. We had booked everything through Viking and they are great at taking care of all details, so when I called them they had already rescheduled us on a flight for the next day.  The airline gave us vouchers for food, transport, and a room at the airport Radisson.  Meanwhile, my husband got even worse and I kept trying to find cold meds that looked familiar in the Boots pharmacy at the airport.  Eventually we made it home, took home Covid tests just to be sure and we were negative.  Did tests the next day, negative.  But after two doctor visits it was decided that John had a sinus infection and bronchitis...lots of rest, soup, meds...and it took a bit for him to feel better.  I did not get sick at all!  Thank goodness...one of us had to be well to take care of the other!

Easter was the most bizarre ever...we attended church on zoom and were in our pjs all day!!!

Life is slowly getting back to normal...and we are looking forward to a great May.

Yesterday was the Lancaster Race Against Racism and the rain held out for the most part.

Since John is still recovering we decided he should not join in the fun with the drizzly weather.  I did not run, but walked with a team from my church.  Out of about 3000 runners/walkers I came in 1,444.  Not too bad.  I am thinking that I might just try to run this 5K next year.  I am a great walker but have never been a runner.  Any tips for someone who would like to start ?
Hope all has been well in your world this past month.  Thanks for stopping by Our New Vista.  Have a marvelous May!

  1. Glad to hear from you, so sorry to hear about John but good he’s now on the mend. Looks like your trip was great (especially the gelato ๐Ÿ™‚). As you may recall we’ve traveled with Viking for river cruising, I don’t think there’s a better way to cruise, although it is the only cruising I’ve experienced! How many days was the ocean cruise to Greece, was it busy with tourists? Were doing 17 days with a post in Amsterdam in August, can’t wait!

  3. What a great trip and so sorry it did not end well for your hubby. Our neighbors just returned from a Viking river boat cruise and both came home with Covid. They are fine now. Good job on the walk/run!

  4. What an amazing trip! I have been on a ship only once to cross the ocean, and I have decided that it’s my favorite way to travel. So, so sorry that your husband became ill! Thankful that it wasn’t COVID. I have participated in 5K events in past years. This one you just did is an excellent focus!

  5. I wondered where you were! I'm so glad you were on a fabulous trip. The food and itinerary looked amazing! I'm sorry John got sick but glad it wasn't covid. That's awesome about the race. I've heard the Couch to 5K program is really good for running....you're already ahead of the game because you walk!
