Closet Update
We recently reorganized our closet - one of the reasons we loved the floorplan of this apartment was the size and location of the primary bedroom closet.
The closet is huge, has two entries - one off of the laundry room which makes it very convenient. When we moved in we added double hanging racks and some extra shelves - and used our old oak tv armoire as storage on one wall.
It is a beautiful piece of furniture and I hated to get rid of it...works great for shoes, had drawers for storage, and a great place to store out of season clothing on the top.
BUT...the rest of our closet just was not working for us. We had some pull out drawers for tee shirts, underwear, etc. - but they were plastic and not very user friendly or good looking.
Always on the lookout for some solutions and thinking of maybe getting a closet company to come in and give us a plan...until one day in the Spring we took a road trip to the Container Store! We walked in and saw the Elfa units on sale and all sized were a great price.
We purchase two...along with the solid pieces to fit on top of the units. BUT...we got to the Container Store AFTER we had been to Costco and purchased a new computer, the huge package of paper towels, and other items. Were these new units going to fit in our car...and we were about 1 1/2 hours away from home!
We took the package of paper towels apart...
distributed them around as best we could. Then we realize that we could fold down the back seats...so we took everything out and did that, packed it up again. And that is when my wonderful husband said "shouldn't we get another one for the foyer closet so your purses are all nice an organized?" We went back in the store and said we are buying another unit, but we are not sure if it will fit so we might be bringing it right back !
We made it fit...we could not see out of the back window, had to rely on our mirrors, and no more shopping that day - no more room!
John did a great job putting the units together...the first one took awhile, but once he got the hang of it the project went quickly!
We put the two of them side by side...
and LOVE them! The drawers make it easy to organize everything, they slide so easily, and the top provides a place for storage.
This was the foyer closet before...
and after ! Larger purses fit in the bigger drawer, smaller ones in the others, and that top drawer is perfect for sunglasses, keys, etc. I love the way it keeps the closet organized.
Here is a look at the rest of the main closet once we got it all together...
Found these great bins at Ross and use them for items I don't need very often...
and found these chalk tag clips on Amazon to label everything.
Love my flip flop holder - from Container Store a few years ago.
I know I have TOO many clothes, but when I walk in and see them all organized like this it makes me smile!
I found some smaller organizers that matched the bins and use that to hold scissors, tape, sock holders, and my Downey Wrinkle spray - love that stuff!
I used Command hook units - 3 in a row - to hang all my costume jewelry necklaces. I feel if I see them I wear them more often. A bin underneath my jewelry armoire holds my slippers. We added a mirror to help when we are getting dressed and it completes that wall.
My dangling earrings are organized on a piece of ribbon - you can click on the link to my post of 2019 for how I did that. Once again, if I see them, I wear them.
The jewelry armoire is next on my organization list...that holds my post earrings, bracelets, pins, etc. Going to do a purge of all that soon and only keep what I wear.
Very happy with our closet - it's not California Closets - LOL! Since John and I come from the mining region of Pennsylvania we refer to our makeover as "Coal Region Closets"!
Have you reorganized your closets ? What did you use? Do it on your own or have a service do it ? I would love to hear your ideas and plans - please leave a comment below. I really love hearing from you!
Thanks for stopping by Our New Vista - enjoy the rest of August!
Looks great Ann!! You and John are hired to come to our house, anytime!!
ReplyDeleteOh by the way, Marianne😉
ReplyDeleteThe "new" closet looks great!
ReplyDeleteThanks - have a great week!
DeleteThis makeover turned out so well and it looks like you have a lot more practical and attractive storage. I love the Elfa systems and have used it for our pantry storage. I like the idea of using the drawers in your foyer closet, that's something I might be able to do! I loved how you ingeniously packed the car to make it all fit. Getting to the Container Store is a treat so if it's a long drive, I totally understand stocking up! You must feel like you are in a fancy boutique when you pick out your jewlery and outfits every day!
ReplyDeleteYes, Love Elfa - have pull out shelves in our pantry cabinet, but looking for additional places for those shelves. They are so easy to use!
DeleteWow Ann, you have a huge closet and the new update looks great! I hope you stay cool and have a nice week.
ReplyDeleteIt all looks so organized - love it!
ReplyDeleteWow! The closet looks great!
ReplyDeleteWhen we got home from our cruise and we were homebound due to Covid, I took the opportunity to reorganize my linen closet and pantry. “Out with the old” was my mantra! I felt 100 lbs lighter.
Your space looks amazing. Quite the inspiration to keep on organizing!
This is Lisa btw. I didn’t realize I was commenting anonymously. Sorry!
DeleteThank, Lisa - It does feel good to get organized. I tend to hold onto things too long, so a purge is coming!
DeleteThe “new” closet looks so well organized now! Great job. RHill, TX
ReplyDeleteThanks - now need to purge stuff I don't need!
DeleteOh, how I need to dive into this kind of project!
ReplyDeleteWow that is some closet....It looks great...When my husband passed away last year, I was finally able to reclaim the closet space in our bedroom...He took over the double closet in the room that i installed 2 bars in to maximize the space!! He had so many postal uniforms and everything that goes with them like coats, jackets, sweaters, shorts and pants...He gifted them to the clothes pin in the post office where he worked when he retired so other guys could use them...My clothes had been moved into one of the other bedroom closets. I donated all of his clothes to a Soup Kitchen that also runs a mobile clothing store... I now have all my clothes back in my bedroom. I also went through them all and donated a lot of things to a local church's mission Clothing boutique...Thanks so much for stopping by!

We just had our house painted and got new carpets, so everything has been packed up, and now I'm unpacking...and reorganizing. So I love seeing what you did with your closet. I need to rearrange mine as well. My space isn't as big as yours, but I might could downsize it and still do something similar. Thanks for sharing!
